  The Ministry for Emergency Situations of the Republic of Belarus (MES) is a state agency, exercising control and management in the sphere of prevention and elimination of natural and man-made emergency situations and fire safety.
   
  Carrying out the national policy in the field of prevention and elimination of natural and man-made emergency situations (accidents, catastrophes, natural and other calamities);

Exercising state control over fire safety, safe functioning of industrial and nuclear power sectors, protection and utilization of territories, affected by radioactive contamination;

Organizing and implementing measures aimed at elimination of emergency situations;

Coordinating activities of other national government agencies, local executive and administrative branches in the sphere of prevention and elimination of emergency situations;

Providing for the functioning of the national system of prevention and elimination of emergency situations and the national system of fire safety;

Supervision of agencies and departments for emergency situations;

Providing for preparedness of agencies and departments for emergency situations within the Ministry's competence and fulfillment of the tasks within the system of territorial defense of the Republic of Belarus;

Development of material and technical basis and high level of alertness of agencies and departments for emergency situations;

Fulfillment of other tasks on commission of the President of the Republic of Belarus.
